ICO: the International Council of Ophthalmology
The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) represents and serves professional associations of ophthalmologists throughout the world.
The Board of Trustees of the ICO is the executive body and operational arm.
The ICO is dedicated to preserving and restoring vision for all people worldwide and to serving the current and future needs of ophthalmologists and the public.
Commitment to ophthalmologic societies
One of the primary commitments of the ICO is to stimulate and support communication and collaboration among ophthalmologic societies and ophthalmologists globally, particularly initiatives to preserve vision.
Resources and connections for society leaders
To help the leaders of national and international societies of ophthalmologists strengthen their organizations, the ICO's Eye Site offers:

- a list of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that play an important role in eye care
- access to a database of information on ophthalmologic societies and residency training programs around the world
- links to the Web sites of:
- Supranational and international ophthalmic and subspecialty organizations

Join Us for the ICO General Assembly June 5 at 13:30 in Berlin
Please mark your calendar for the ICO General Assembly, Saturday, June 5 from 13:30 to 17:00 at the 2010 World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) in Berlin.
The General Assembly is mainly for the official Representatives from each ICO member society, but we would like to invite other leaders of ICO members and potential members to join us.
We are planning a stimulating discussion of strategic priorities for improving eye care and will ask for your feedback on what ICO programs are most valuable and what we should be doing in the future.
ICO Representatives will vote on proposed revised statutes and elect members of the Board. We will be sending a complete agenda and more details to ICO Representatives early next month.
Luncheon Meeting of Advocates on June 5 at WOC 2010
The ICO Advocacy Committee has asked each national ophthalmologic society to name one member as its official “Advocate” to work with the ICO on global initiatives to increase support for eye care.
There will be a luncheon meeting of Advocates from 12:00 to 13:30 on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the World Ophthalmology Congress in Berlin.
Serge Resnikoff, MD, PhD, ICO Director for Advocacy, will talk about what advocacy means, the role of Advocates and how they can contribute to VISION 2020. We will also highlight an advocacy case study: how VISION 2020 Australia convinced the Australian government to allocate AUD $45 million to support eye care programs in the Asia Pacific region.
If your society has not yet done so, you may still name an Advocate to work with the ICO. Please send the name and e-mail address of your Advocate to advocacy@icoph.org by April 15.
Share Your Photographs of Ophthalmology in Action
ICO Members: please share your photographs of ophthalmology in action with us. We want to include them on the new ICO Web site.
We are looking for high quality images that show ophthalmologists involved in eye care, ophthalmic education and leadership activities. Please send your best photographs (clear, high quality jpg files) for consideration to leader@icoph.org. Be sure to include your name, image description and any other important details.
We look forward to learning more about you through your photos.
2010 ICO Directory of Ophthalmologic Societies
The ICO will be compiling information for the ICO Directory of Ophthalmologic Societies in time for the World Ophthalmology Congress this June. The Directory will list all of the national and international ophthalmologic societies in the world.
We recently sent an e-mail to those who are listed as contacts for the ICO database with complete instructions for updating your society's listing. The text of that message is available at archive.icoph.org/news/directory1001.html.
If your society's listing is not accurate, please update the database. If you can not access the database, send an e-mail to info@icoph.org, and we can send your username and password. In addition you may send an e-mail with the correct information to be listed in the Directory.
We look forward to including all societies in the 2010 ICO Directory of Ophthalmologic Societies.
2010 ICO Member Dues Payment
In early December, 2009, the ICO Officers sent dues invoices to each ICO Member. A copy of that mailing and an update on ICO programs and recent survey results is available here: archive.icoph.org/news/ICODuesMailing2010.html.
We ask that member societies send ICO dues payments by January 1, 2010. Payments can be made by credit card, wire transfer, or check. Payment instructions were provided on the invoice.
For questions, please contact mailto:treasurer@icoph.org. We thank our member societies for their support and participation in the ICO.
